    Development of GRANT & TWAIN

    January 2012 - Elizabeth Diggs reads "Memoirs of U. S. Grant" and proposes to Billy Carden, Artistic Director of Ensemble Studio Theatre, NYC, that she begin development of a play inspired by the book.  Begins study of Civil War and Grant's life.  Two table readings (no audience) at EST as play develops.

    May 2012 - Playwright joins U. S. Grant Historical Society and attends annual conference at Mississippi State.  Meets top Grant scholars.

    November 2013 - First reading of the play at EST's main stage to a full-house invited audience.  Cheers and standing ovation.

    January -February 2014 - Production of early draft at Salt Lake Acting Company.  Receives Edgerton Foundation for New American Plays award.

    October 2014 - Two readings of new draft at Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, St. Louis.  Readings of further new drafts there in 2015, 2016, 2017.

    January 2017 - Reading of new draft at the Spencertown Academy, Spencertown, NY.  Diggs consults with John Rubinstein as dramaturg on revised draft.

    June 2017 - Reading of revised draft at the Beckett Theater, Theater Row, NYC, directed by John Rubinstein with Richard Thomas, Laura Linney, Dylan Baker.

    November 2017 - Elizabeth Diggs attends opening of PS21 Black Box Theater, Chatham, NY.  Proposes a production to founder Judy Grunberg and Exec. Director Susan Davies.

    January 2018 - "Table" reading of play for Judy Grunberg, Regge Life (Director) and Joel Elins (Production Manager).  PS21 agrees to produce the play in September 2018.

    September 2018 - SOLD OUT all five performances at PS21, Chatham, NY.

    May 2019 - Barrington Stage Company, Pittsfield, MA hosts reading.
